After 30+ years as a teacher, education consultant, instructional designer and author, I returned to my first love, teaching. Currently, I am a 3rd grade teacher in an urban school district. I hold a Bachelors of Arts degree in Speech and Hearing, a Masters in Elementary Education and a Doctorate in Reading.
In 2020 at the end of my second full year back in the classroom, COVID caused the closing of school in March. We went remote. School closed at the beginning of May of 2020. I headed south to be closer to my family and accepted a teaching position in third grade.
In my district, all students and teachers returned to the physical building in 2021. Remote and hybrid teaching was tough with engagement being the greatest challenge. I had no idea of the difficulties ahead.
COVID changed the fabric of our society. Being out of school impacted students and their families in ways I am still struggling to understand. I have never been more sure that I am needed and appreciated as a teacher. I hope I can stick it out.
